Peace, justice and cone restored
It seems not all heroes wear capes but rather they might possess a cherry-picker.
Peace and justice were restored to the Wellington neighbourhood of Karori on Wednesday after ‘‘Ponga Cone’’ – a road cone that had long sat atop a local ponga tree – was reinstated.
The disappearance of the cone last Sunday baffled residents, who mourned the loss of the suburb’s greatest unofficial ‘‘art installation’’.
That prompted two men armed only with a cone, a cherrypicker and a dream, to come to the rescue. Kaiwharawhaura cherry-picker hire company Hanging Around heard the suburb’s plea and leapt into action.
Director Sam Redhill said: ‘‘The new cone and blue [sign] was sacrificed from our yard but we were only too happy to help. We know it doesn’t hold a candle to the legend of how the original came to be – but if the community accepts the new one, then we’ll leave it in place.’’
Social media users called the men ‘‘heroes’’ and suggested they run for council or be named Wellingtonians Of The Year.
Karori resident Megan Huddleston noticed the cone had disappeared on Sunday. She said it was ‘‘like a legend’’ and had been there since her 7-year-old twins were babies.
