Lawyer caught invoicing clients for fake land tax
A lawyer who charged clients a $100 nonexistent ‘‘land transfer tax’’ engaged in unsatisfactory conduct, a lawyers’ standards committee has found. The Law Society reported an unnamed lawyer imposed the bill on 240 clients over almost two years. The committee ordered him to reduce his fee for those clients by $100. The lawyer claimed the charges were to account for the extra time required to adhere to the anti-money laundering legislation.
