Road safety improvements

The Dominion Post - - News -

Roading safety measures have been fasttracked in Horowhenua ahead of the busy holiday period. New Zealand Transport Agency director of regional relationships Emma Speight met with Horowhenua District Council and Ka¯piti Coast District Council to discuss improvements. The meeting followed four fatalities on State Highway 1 between O¯ taki and Foxton during a two-week period. The two councils had been advocating for safety improvements before the roads became busier during the holiday season. Although the transport agency had planned for long-term safety upgrades, officials have agreed to implement safety measures during the next three weeks. They will install flexible posts on flush medians and electronic safety message signs. Ka¯piti Coast Mayor K Gurunathan was pleased with the outcome of the meeting, saying ‘‘this is an important stretch of highway for our community’’.
