Unique development in Petone
Tenders close on April 10 for a unique new Petone development that supremely reflects the historic suburb’s heritage and lifestyle appeal.
The three residences, at 42 Nelson St, have evolved from the Wesley Church, which was built on the flat and sunny site in 1883. Heritage enthusiast Tony Cook, of James Cook Joinery, commissioned Moore Design to redesign the simple timber structure into a stunning showcase for modern living in the heart of the Hutt Valley’s hospitality hub.
Key heritage features, including exterior detailing, Gothic windows, original tongue and groove timber ceilings and restored leadlights, have been retained, refreshed and re-installed. “For instance, the leadlights were removed, revived to as-new condition, then double-glazed before being refitted,” Llew Kemeys, of Ray White, says.
“This has been a true passion project for Tony. I have seen nothing of this type in the Hutt Valley in my 20-plus years in real estate.
“The heritage aspect of the residences means you’re getting a truly unique property that may not be available again for another couple of decades.” The individually configured residences have been painted in accordance with Heritage New Zealand recommendations and the century-old character complemented by interior design from Di Baker Interiors, bespoke kitchens and joinery, engineered solid oak flooring, rain-sensor opening skylights and Cavalier Bremworth carpet. Each SpiceBuild-completed residence has secure pedestrian and vehicle access and a 25-square metre garage, with substantial loft storage, in a separate structure that matches the addition to the largest residence, the 229-square metre Nelson (which has a floor area of 171-square metres). “It’s extremely private and is the only home with a private 33-square metre courtyard and extensive second-floor views of Petone,” Kemeys says.
“It combines the best of the church’s historical features with a modern extension.”
The middle residence, the 183-square metre PitoOne, has a floor area of 157-square metres and an 11-square metre deck – as does the west facing, 193-square metre Britannia with 157-square metres of floor space. “This home fronts Nelson Street and enjoys easy pedestrian access from the street, great sun and outlook to the Western Hills,” Kemeys says. “Because of the exceptional interest in this development, we’ll be running a tender ballot. “So we encourage prospective buyers to tender for all three and rank their preferences in case they miss out on their first choice.”
“They’re just steps away from Jackson Street, with its restaurants, bars and shops, and are two minutes from the beach.
“They’re also much bigger than your typical Petone home. Petone apartments average 60 to 80 square metres and the average home is about 110 square metres, so they offer a lot more in floor area alone.”
