Pope to declare British cardinal a saint

-

The Victorian theologian and poet Cardinal John Henry Newman will be declared a saint by Pope Francis on October 13, the first English person living after the 17th century to be canonised. A leading Oxford intellectual and Anglican priest, Newman incurred the hostility of the Protestant establishment by converting to Roman Catholicism in 1845. He battled widespread anti-Catholic prejudice until his death in 1890.
