Wi-fi off to stop fights

- Transport

Transport bosses are planning to disconnect wi-fi at Auckland train stations after hours in a bid to stop young people gathering nearby. The plan comes as assaults, fights and disorderly behaviour plague Auckland’s southern commuter railway line, which runs from Britomart to Papakura. Papakura train station has been labelled the ‘‘biggest problem’’ area in the network, documents obtained by Stuff under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA) show. In June, youth ‘‘assemblies’’ were reported to be congregating on the overbridge near the Papakura station to use the free wi-fi. Violence has been an issue at the train station for several years. Shon Wanahi, 26, was fatally shot near the station in March 2016. So far this year, seven assaults at Papakura train station had been reported.
