A crowd of Ma¯ori land marchers crosses Auckland Harbour Bridge in October 1975. The 1000-kilometre h¯ıkoi led by then 79-year-old Dame Whina Cooper, was to protest ongoing Ma¯ori land alienation. It began in the Far North on September 14 with 50 participants, which grew to 5000 by the time the h¯ıkoi arrived to present their 60,000-signature petition on the steps of Parliament.
