West Coast cleanups
Your readers will be aware of the Fox River landfill catastrophe unfolding on the West Coast. We also have the Hector landfill catastrophe, a former landfill that has also been washed out by extreme weather events associated with climate change, at the home of the endangered Hector’s dolphin.
Both events are receiving global attention that threatens New Zealand’s clean green image.
West Coast Regional Council has publicly announced that climate change is a myth and it does not support the Zero Carbon Bill. Little wonder that Conservation Minister and Associate Environment Minister Eugenie Sage is reluctant to fund the cleanup of these climate change-related catastrophes.
It is time for WCRC to revoke its stance on climate change. Why bite the hand that is expected to feed you? Furthermore it is time for Sage to be adult about funding the cleanup in the spirit of kaitiakitanga, otherwise New Zealand will suffer the consequences.
