Prejudice on religion
According to John Watson (Letters, Aug 2), Catholics shouldn’t complain about ‘‘Catholic bashing’’ because the church is ‘‘morally bankrupt’’ (because of protected paedophilia).
The church does have a patchy record – lots of bad, lots of good – just like every other organisation and every individual, so perhaps we’re all morally bankrupt. Watson also resents the church for ‘‘trying to impose its will’’ on society. In countries like New Zealand, the church is just a lobby like countless others – trying to persuade and influence.
Watson’s skewed reasoning is simply an expression of popular prejudice. Gavan O’Farrell, Waterloo
