Southern Lights display
The South Island has been treated to a Southern Lights spectacle over the past two nights. The Aurora Australis – also known as the Southern Lights – put on a show for those willing to brave the freezing temperatures and snow. Christian Heinze-Rowney, who witnessed the Aurora Australis, pictured, from Christchurch, said the solar winds ‘‘worked their magic’’ on Monday night. Matthew Bridle captured the lights on Monday night from Kaitorete Spit. ‘‘That was the most amazing thing I have ever seen,’’ he said. According to the University of Otago’s aurora alert website, there has been moderate geomagnetic activity in the south.
