No charges over escape

The man who absconded from Covid-19 isolation at Rotorua’s Sudima Hotel on Wednesday night will not face charges. Police said: ‘‘Charges have not been brought against the person involved in Wednesday’smanaged isolation incident in Rotorua.’’ Police said they would not be making any further comment on the matter. Other escapees, such as the motherwho helped her children escape isolation in Hamilton, have been charged and jailed. Air force Commodore Darryn Webb, the head of managed isolation who visited Rotorua six days before this latest escape to announce additional Defence Force personnel for Rotorua’s three managed isolation facilities, declined to comment on the charging decision. Earlier, he said therewas no informatio­n to indicate the man came into contactwit­h any person while hewas outside the facility.
