More subways

-

Peter Graham raises the subject of vertical separation in order to free up Wellington traffic (Letters, April 13).

This is indeed true but it should be applied in a particular area. The distinguishing feature of Wellington traffic is the number of people who walk from the inner city each day to the transport hub of the railway station. This includes the number who now walk along the waterfront.

There is a good pedestrian subway from the bus terminal to the rail station. If there was an underground walkway from Featherston St to connect with this, and another from the wharf area also, this would encourage many more people to walk, as they would not have to endure standing at traffic lights in bad weather, waiting to cross.

It would also reduce the delay for vehicular traffic waiting for pedestrians to straggle across. Such subways can be built for a fraction of the cost of proposed changes.

Such a subway was built under Bowen St but it remains the exclusive way for parliamentary staff. Disappointing! Trevor Mowbray, Johnsonville
