Hooray for cycleway
I am thrilled the trial Brooklyn Road cycleway is finally under construction. I cycle to the CBD most weekdays, dropping my son at daycare on the way.
Last year I was nearly squashed by a driver at the top of Brooklyn Rd, and last week I was nearly ‘‘doored’’ by a parked driver potentially sending me under traffic at the bottom of Brooklyn Rd. Either incident could have easily turned me from a person into something more resembling mincemeat, and neither involved one of the many intimidating large trucks that use Brooklyn Rd.
The health, cost, and time benefits vastly outweigh the risks and I remain certain the best way to move around Wellington is on a bike.
This cycleway will provide a safer space and encourage more people to give cycling a go – exactly what we need to help traffic congestion and our climate crisis.
When covering how we share our space in our cities I challenge the editor and Stuff to remember your goals stated in the Forever Project: ‘‘committed to clear-eyed, insistent coverage of the epochdefining challenges of climate change and sustainability’’. And selfishly, I just want to get home safely to my family.
