Sewage flows into ocean

A damaged wastewater pipe has contaminated the ocean in Eastbourne. The pipe caused sewage to flow into the ocean near Sunshine Bay yesterday. Wellington Water advised no swimming, water activities, or kaimoana collection until Friday. The affected areas are signposted with ‘‘no swimming’’ signs on the coast, and sucker trucks would work overnight to clean up the wastewater and stop further contamination. Crews were excavating the damaged pipe for repairs yesterday afternoon. Wellington Water would continue monitoring and sampling the water every four hours.
