There’s something in the water

-

There are reports of a change in water taste and smell across the capital.

Wellington Water said it was likely a sign of increased levels of algae in lakes as the weather became warmer.

Geosmin, a non-toxic algae, is more common in summer and grows on the surface of lakes and reservoirs. Some people are more sensitive to its earthy taste than others.

The water was being constantly tested and the compounds causing the taste were ‘‘harmless’’, Wellington Water said in a Facebook post.

The issue was expected to go away soon.

Anyone concerned about an earthy taste or smell should cool their water in the fridge for 30 minutes, but only if it is not discoloured.
