App is an answer

Search for lowest petrol price (Nov 18) reported the Commerce Commission encouraging motorists to take action to stoke competition between our petrol retailers.

But no mention of how motorists are supposed to do that. Why is the commission so coy about promoting a wonderful tool that easily allows motorists to find the cheapest petrol?

That tool is Gaspy, an app that is free to download (but you do have to pay a small amount if you want to have it ad-free).

Why doesn’t the Commerce Commission get behind Gaspy and promote it?

If enough motorists used Gaspy it would truly undermine the cynical pricing used by the higher-priced outlets. It is not uncommon to see price differentials of 30 cents a litre within a few kilometres of each other.
