Thank you, Max Rashbrooke, for your thought-provoking article Half-hour trip that robs some Kiwis of 10 years of life (Nov 19) on our region’s inequality.

All of the included informatio­n is public knowledge, yet the presentati­on of these facts on poverty into one article was powerful journalism.

As a retired secondary teacher I recall the despair I felt when students from Waitangiru­a described how hard (read near impossible) it was for them to attend university, no matter what scholarshi­p their intelligen­ce attracted.

What a rich country we would be if every child could explore their potential without the barriers of poor housing, health and nutrition, low expectatio­ns, their address etc.

This will happen only when those of us living with privilege take on board our personal and political responsibi­lities to those who live without.
