Thank you, Max Rashbrooke, for your thought-provoking article Half-hour trip that robs some Kiwis of 10 years of life (Nov 19) on our region’s inequality.
All of the included information is public knowledge, yet the presentation of these facts on poverty into one article was powerful journalism.
As a retired secondary teacher I recall the despair I felt when students from Waitangirua described how hard (read near impossible) it was for them to attend university, no matter what scholarship their intelligence attracted.
What a rich country we would be if every child could explore their potential without the barriers of poor housing, health and nutrition, low expectations, their address etc.
This will happen only when those of us living with privilege take on board our personal and political responsibilities to those who live without.
