In-form Fox gets weekend off

-

Leading Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has missed the cut at the Australian PGA Championship.

The world No 27, who just last week was in a shootout with Rory McIlroy to win the Race for Dubai on the DP World Tour, found the going too tough at Royal Queensland Golf Club yesterday.

Fox eventually finished in 19th place in Dubai to end a breakout year on the tour, but that form deserted him in Australia as he misfired with a round two shocker of three-over-par 74 on a low-scoring day for most.

Fox, who is in an 11-way tie for 105th, couldn’t find the consistency that has been his mainstay all season, dropping shots with six bogeys and managing only three birdies.

Fellow Kiwi Denzel Ieremia, who sits outside the top 1100 in the men’s world rankings, is leading the Kiwi charge in a four-way tie for fifth after backing up his opening round 67 with a three-under 68.

That left him only three shots off the pace set by Australian clubhouse leader Jason Scrivener.

Fellow Daniel Hillier was in a sixway tie for ninth at six-under after shooting a four-under 67.

Next best of the Kiwis is Chang Gi Lee at five-under in a tie for 15th.

Australian Cameron Smith, who won the Open Championship in July before jumping ship to Saudi-backed LIV Golf, was in outright second following a second round 65.
