A Remutaka tunnel
Douglas Maclachlan (letters, Nov 21) suggests putting a tunnel through the Remutakas.
In this earthquake area, geologists, seismologists, engineers, meteorologists/ climate change scientists and perhaps vulcanologists would need to be involved.
We would need to drive a ‘‘safe’’ distance up the hill from both sides to place the tunnel entrances well above calculated rises in sea-level.
All possible alternative routes, including unplanned ones, should perhaps be investigated against all likely hazards.
Do engineers yet have sufficiently tested and proven construction methods to withstand the forces of nature?
Douglas is right, something needs to be done. Let’s hope specialists can develop a practical, workable solution to this longrunning problem.
