Chapman-Taylor’s home on market
A chance to share part of New Zealand’s architectural history should attract a range of buyers to revered architect James Chapman-Taylor’s fully renovated Upper Hutt home.
The former Silverstream home of one of the country’s most distinguished residential architects was sold in 2012 and has since been carefully refurbished.
Joseph Lupi, owner of Century 21 First Choice Realty, said it was expected to fetch well over $1 million.
Before his death in 1958 people were lining up to have a house designed by Chapman-Taylor and Lupi expects similar interest from buyers looking to be part of the architect’s popular legacy.
‘‘We are really excited to be marketing this property which has been thoroughly brought back to its former glory. This is quite an extraordinary piece of New Zealand architectural history, which now presents a rare opportunity for any discerning buyer to be its next custodian,’’ Lupi said.
Born in 1878, Chapman-Taylor was renowned for his traditional English cottage style homes and over his near 60-year career he designed and built 84 houses around the country. Lupi said the 2057 square metre property was an entertainer’s delight.
‘‘It exudes open plan living and dining with a beautifully presented kitchen all flowing out to an extensive north facing deck. It comes with some fabulous finishings throughout, including chandeliers.’’
The five bedroom, four bathroom home also features a one- bedroom sleep-out and two-car garage.
‘‘It is truly history, sophistication, and style all in one. These kinds of properties don’t come on the market often and when they do, they don’t stay around for long,’’ Lupi said.
The tender process closes on October 5.
