Nominations for Welly awards open

- CHELSEA MCLAUGHLIN

Nominations are now open for the 2017 Dominion Post Wellingtonian Of The Year Awards.

Known as The Wellys, the awards began in 1989 to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the greater Wellington community.

Past winners include Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie of Flight Of The Conchords, Jane Campion, Sir Peter Jackson, Rod Drury, Sir Jon Trimmer, Steve Logan and Al Brown, Dame Kate Harcourt and Taika Waititi.

The Wellys recognise people across nine categories: arts, business, community service, education, environment, government, science and technology, sport and youth.

There is also one overall winner recognised as the supreme Wellingtonian Of The Year.

Sir Richard Taylor won the supreme award in 2015, and said at the time he was ‘‘very, very privileged’’ to win.

While people had tried to tempt him away from Wellington with ‘‘very persuasive arguments’’, he thought the capital was the place to be.

Nominations for this year’s awards open today and will close on October 9.

You can nominate anyone from the region online at wellys.co.nz.

Finalists will be announced on November 1 and the awards dinner takes place at Te Papa on December 6.

Tickets will be available from November 1.
