French DS brand shows its vi­sion for 2035


DS Au­to­mo­biles, Citroen’s lux­ury brand, reck­ons it has the an­swer to what it calls the ‘‘cur­rent, near-ob­ses­sional quest for char­ac­ter­less mo­bil­ity’’ of to­mor­row’s cars.

The com­pany says it has com­bined new tech­nolo­gies with ‘‘poetic cre­ativ­ity’’ in its new con­cept car, the DS X E-Tense.

The cock­pit is ac­cessed by a gull­wing-type door that is trimmed with a car­bon fi­bre/ leather weave. The sin­gle seat can be adapted to the driver’s build like the moulded seats used in mo­tor rac­ing, while its re­clined po­si­tion helps to keep the car’s cen­tre of grav­ity low.

The steer­ing wheel is leather, wood and metal. The two-tone Mil­len­nium Blue and Navy Blue Ani­line leather is fin­ished with DS’s trade­mark pearl top-stitch pat­tern.

The asym­met­ric ar­chi­tec­ture pro­vides dif­fer­ent cabin ex­pe­ri­ences left and right. Un­der­neath the clear glass canopy, the pas­sen­ger is en­closed in a cap­sule with a ven­ti­lated, mas­sag­ing seat that stretches back ‘‘like a de­ployed bird’s wing’’ says DS, with a feather star mo­tif crown­ing the top of the back.

Trav­el­ling in au­ton­o­mous mode, the dash­board be­comes a hi-fi­delity sound bar.

The see-through elec­trochro­matic glass floor pro­vides a view of the road un­der­neath. The pas­sen­ger gets fil­tered, scented air; an ad­di­tional seat makes it pos­si­ble to travel three-up.

In ad­di­tion to be­ing con­nected to the out­side world, a per­sonal as­sis­tant – IRIS, which takes the form of a holo­gram – tends to the ve­hi­cle’s func­tions.

Lo­cated within the front wheels, the elec­tri­fied pow­er­train pro­duces 400kW, a fig­ure that rises to 1000kW in Cir­cuit mode, which also brings the sports sus­pen­sion into play – de­signed by the tech­ni­cal team be­hind the DS For­mula E racer.

The car­bon fi­bre chas­sis sits on new-de­sign springs and tor­sion bars, while trac­tion, grip and de­cel­er­a­tion is con­trolled by an ac­tive sys­tem that adapts to road sur­face.

Get­ting more into fu­ture­fan­tasy, DS says the body is ca­pa­ble of re­cov­er­ing its orig­i­nal form af­ter an im­pact, while the con­fig­u­ra­tion of the front grille and the cool­ing ca­pac­ity adapt to the driver’s whims. Thanks to DS Light Veil light cur­tains, the bright­ness of the lights ad­justs to suit the oc­cu­pants, the car and its sur­round­ings.

DS Au­to­mo­biles says its X E-Tense con­cept is the an­swer to con­cerns about fu­ture cars be­ing bor­ing boxes.
