The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Vines Village

-

Are the kids ready to stretch their legs and run amok? Stop in at the Vines Village. Jeff Fulton and twin brother Tim took over the Vines Village in 2013 and have set about creating a familyfriendly space that appeals to everyone. From a Pinterest-inspired playground to a rugby field with balls for kicking, a bike trail, laser tag and a selfie platform, plus a café and wine tasting at Whitehaven for the grown-ups, this is the perfect place to enjoy a long sunny Blenheim afternoon.

Vines Village is also a good stop for those with limited time and who want to get a feel for Blenheim’s creative talent. Gourmet Collection stocks a large range of local artisan beers, spirits, foods and preserves. Visitors can try many of the products on offer, and a wrapping and delivery service is available. Try walking out without something new – it’s near impossible.

Next door, Lilac Wine showcases the work of local artists in its gallery and gift shop. From prints to glassware, tea towels and ceramics, the items are well priced and offer a quick preview of what is on offer in this region. AFD Store – which stocks brightly coloured cushions, handmade bags and kooky accessories – is a treasure trove. People disappear into it, and reemerge an hour later with a dazed look and steaming credit card. The store is the creation of local interior designer and stylist Alex Fulton (reality television viewers may recognise her from The Block). An online store is in development (alexfultondesign.com). 193 Rapaura Road, Blenheim, (03) 579 5424, thevinesvillage.co.nz Alex Fulton.
