The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Cape Campbell

-

At NZ Life & Leisure, we generally avoid using the word unique, but there really is nowhere quite like Cape Campbell. It's wild, isolated, barren, and beautiful – all of those words that suit dramatic vistas. For those looking for a one-of-a-kind, technology-free holiday, where an occasional seal might lumber from the sea into your yard, this is the perfect place.

Cape Campbell’s history is linked to the lighthouse, which is on the very eastern tip of the South Island.

The lighthouse began helping ships navigate around the jagged, treacherous reefs in 1870 but, despite its guidance, 19 shipwrecks lie beneath the cape's waves.

Today, below the striped tower there is an array of small baches that can be hired – perfect for those who like their own company and an excellent book. The baches are basic, reminiscent of what the early settlers would have experienced, but they have been beautifully restored, mainly because they formed part of the film set for the

Hollywood film, The Light Between Oceans, based on the book by the same name. The movie was filmed here and restoration of the cottages was part of the location deal. Film buffs can stay where actor Michael Fassbender once worked.

Cape Campbell is a working farm. It's not easy land, but it's exciting. It's about an hour from Blenheim, so some planning is needed when it comes to food and packing. Walking shoes are essential. The Cape Campbell Track is no longer operational, but guests are welcome to explore the huts and tracks dotted around the farm. (03) 578 4014
