The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
Owaka Museum, Catlins Kayak & Adventure, Earthlore
Operating as a library, gallery and information centre, the Owaka museum is the cultural centre of the Catlins and gives a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich history, spanning sawmilling to shipwrecks. The harsh coastline and conditions have seen 25 wrecks from 1839 to 2000, and memorabilia from these ships is on display. Outside the building lies the mast of the SS Otago, a trans-Tasman steamer wrecked on the coast in 1876 (with no loss of life). The welcoming and light space is an informative place to spend time, especially on a rainy day. 10 Campbell Street, Owaka. (03) 415 8323, owakamuseum.org.nz
