The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Marsden Point

-

Let's address the red and white elephant on the beach. Yes, it seems odd to walk along a white-sand, turquoise-water beach with an oil refinery looming metres behind, but this section of sand is just as good as the more populated areas, if not better due to the low numbers of users. Marsden Point is more popular with fisherman, crabbers and dog walkers than sunbathers, and used to be a prolific breeding ground for pipi, mussels and more; however, the taking of shellfish is currently prohibited. Access at the end of Mair Road.
