The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
The Brynderwyn Hills Walk
Calling this a walk may be an understatement. This challenging 12km trail is definitely more of a hike than a walk, as it climbs the mighty range that guards the North from the encroaching arms of Auckland. The view from the top of the Brynderwyns is iconic, and has brought a tear to the eye of more than one homesick Taniwha supporter. Walking the track one way is estimated to take approximately 6 hours. The advanced-level trail follows logging roads and bush paths (with a few stairs for good measure). The highest point of the walk is Maranui Hill, which stands at 397m, so bring a camera for the view and some snacks to replenish. Enter off Cullen Road (off Cove Road), Waipu, or at the summit of the Brynderwyns, opposite the gravel area (below the orange building that was once a café) at the top of SH1.
