The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

McLeod’s Pizza Barn

-

The Italians may believe that less is more when it comes to pizza, but in Waipu the key word is more. More toppings and more tartan. McLeod's Pizza Barn is an institution – a trip to Bream Bay isn't complete until a Pizza Barn pizza has been had, or at least attempted, as most diners walk out with a distinct yellow takeaway box of leftovers. Brothers Geoff & Clayton Gwynne purchased the established restaurant in 2003 and transformed it into a Scottish-inspired pub with plenty of large tables both indoor by the fire and in the covered outdoor area. The menu sticks to the mantra 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. There are 11 pizzas to choose from, with toppings ranging from venison sausage and mushroom to smoked salmon and asparagus, with a few chicken and vegetarian options as well. There's also a non-pizza menu of hearty Highland fare, such as shanks, burgers and ribs – those classic Scottish dishes!

The Pizza Barn doesn't take bookings so be prepared to wait for a table, especially during summer and weekends. 2 Cove Road, Waipu. (09) 432 1011, on Facebook.
