The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
Dirty Hippie
After spending a weekend in Bream Bay, it's obvious this small community is full of early adopters of the clean, green, plastic-free lifestyle. At the forefront of the movement is Dawn Fryer, an English expat who fell in love first with a Kiwi and then with Waipu. Frustrated with trying to find chemical-free skincare, Dawn experimented with | a probiotic deodorant. As word-of-mouth spread, Dawn launched Dirty Hippie, a natural, organic, plastic-free skincare range that is free from allergens (gluten, soy, dairy, nuts) and almost 100% vegan. Dawn makes everything herself in a twostorey cottage near the bush – and that's no small feat. Dirty Hippie stocks between 70-80 options for the natural and organically minded. The rise of social media activism and awareness has only strengthened her brand – after a video about shampoo bars went viral, sales soared. Her website also stocks a range of eco products such as beeswax food wraps, metal straws, toothbrushes and dental floss, but it's her shampoo bars and deodorant that keep customers coming back. Dirty Hippie is available via the website, at the Waipu Sunday Market and through local stores and cafés such as Logan Maclean. dirtyhippie.co.nz
