The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
Rayner Brothers’ Gallery
Paul Rayner, a ceramicist known for his pop culture figures, runs the gallery with his brother Mark in a restored turn-of-the20th-century villa in the central city. The brothers returned after living in larger cities and overseas for the creative spirit of the place. “Whanganui is attractive to people who want to put their money into their work rather than a mortgage,” says Paul. Mark works across a range of media including glazed plates and figurines, photography and latch hook rugs. He achieved some notoriety when he created a rug depicting former Labour leader Andrew Little, naked. Andrew’s only comment was, “You’ve got my pecs wrong!” 85 Glasgow Street.
