The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
The Remarkables
The Remarkables has grown its reputation as an adventurous person's mountain, attracting those looking for a journey and maybe something a little gritty. Still within an easy drive from downtown Queenstown, the last section of the access road turns to gravel, introducing the idea that there's a more remote adventure ahead.
For serious freestylers or those just wanting to push their limits, The Remarkables offers extensive park features such as jumps and rails. And across the other side of the field lie ungroomed powdery trails that have been compared to a heli-ski run.
However, beginner skiers are well looked after at The Remarkables too. Recently, the learner terrain was extended and a transparent tunnel built over the magic carpet to keep newbies to the sport comfortable. The tunnel is proving such a hit that even experienced skiers come and ride the carpet for the feeling of child-like nostalgia it creates. nzski.com/queenstown
