The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Owaka

-

Owaka, the Catlins’ largest town and a service centre for tourists and its surrounding farms, is situated amongst rolling green hills. With a handful of shops, a well-stocked supermarket and the

Owaka Museum, the town is a good place to spend some time, especially on a rainy day. Five minutes from Owaka on the edge of tidal Catlins Lake is the small settlement of Pounawea. This tranquil place has a camping ground and holiday cribs and moves with rhythm of the tides through the adjacent estuary.
