The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Learn 2 Surf

-

While it may be nicknamed the ‘winterless North', temperatures in Bream Bay can get a little chilly during winter; however, that's no excuse for not getting in the water and learning to ride the waves. “The water's cold, but not Arctic”, says Ellen Snelling, owner and instructor of Learn 2 Surf Waipu. “Once you get used to it, it can be quite pleasant'. Ellen and husband Grae took over Learn 2 Surf in 2017 having moved to Waipu from Melbourne. Now school teacher Ellen coaches year round, with daily classes during summer and options for the well wetsuited during winter. Water temperature aside, Waipu Cove is perfect for learning to surf, regardless of the season. “The waves are mellow, fun and gentle – and consistent. There's only been a handful of days where it's too flat, and a handful of cyclone swells.”

With the swell being both hard to control and predict, Ellen's classes vary around the tides and weather – it's best to book a week or so in advance but be flexible on time. There are options for all levels, from grommets to the well-salted. “We can work on and develop whatever surfers want, from the basics, to rules and etiquette out back, to confidence.” In summer, Learn 2 Surf is based out of the Waipu Cove car park. 021 719 773, learn2surf.co.nz
