The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

If the combination of panoramic views and a challenging course appeals, a round at the Waipu Golf Club will not disappoint. Founded in 1934, it has been at its current Crown Land site since 1966. Initially a 9-hole course, the second nine came into play in 1978 and a new 17th hole was created 5 years ago. With spectacular views of nearby Bream

Bay beach and the Pacific Ocean as well as the Hen and Chicken Islands and Whangarei Heads, golfers face a stiff challenge in more ways than one. Concentrating on your game is one thing, negotiating the undulating links course and whatever nature chooses to throw at you, be it wind, rain or sun, is another. Given its proximity to the coast, the course is sand-based and conditions underfoot are always good. Indeed, the club proudly states that during winter months the predominantly kikuyu grass fairways are among the best in New Zealand. Like the fairways, the greens are also sand-based. Although they run true be warned that the swales and slopes will test even the most accomplished putters.

The 17th, a par-3 hole, is often regarded as the course's feature hole. Indeed it has been compared to the 12th at Augusta National: elevated tee, bunkers at the front, a sloping green and a drop off to the right-hand side. The 10th is another standout hole, and the picturesque par-3 13th with its elevated tee marks the highest point on the course. The course features four sets of tees for men and three for women. The clubhouse, which also has great views, incorporates a golf shop, bar and café, the Tee Café. Gluten-free food is a speciality and there is also a good range of cabinet food and pies on offer. Green fees: $40 (affiliate, weekdays), $45 (affiliate, weekends).
