The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
Towns
As the northern entry point to the Catlins and the main service town of the Clutha region, Balclutha stands on the banks of the mighty Clutha River. The town has a particularly striking and solid bridge built in the 1930s that spans the swiftest and largest-volume river in the country. As an agricultural servicing town, Balclutha is good place to stock up on food prior to turning off State Highway 1 Catlins-bound.
