The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

The Cowshed

-

There are likely to be a few discoveries when an old cowshed is transformed into trendy accommodation – such as hot water cylinders that make fantastic bathroom sinks, and, with a decent water blast, concrete yards that are wonderful entertaining areas. Everything old is new again, and this former farm building is almost unrecognisable as a former bovine pad. It was a family project; then owners Alistair and Jennifer Cochrane moved from Waihi Beach to the rural property between Waihi and Waikino in 2014 and slowly chipped away at the building. Now it's a 2-bedroom, self-contained home complete with full kitchen and an outdoor bath that overlooks the trickling river. The Cowshed is located only a short distance from the Hauraki Rail trail, so is a good place for riders to rest their heads and recharge in front of the firepit. 205 Waitekauri Valley Road, RD2, Waihi. 021 106 2407, thecowshed.nz
