The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

CHAMBERLAIN PARK

- Heather Kidd

Chamberlain Park proclaims itself to be a course “where everyone is welcome every day”. Only 5 minutes from Auckland's CBD, in the suburb of Mt Albert, the 18-hole course is clearly visible and easily accessible from the northwestern motorway. But for how much longer? The public course is at the centre of a stoush between its owners, the Auckland City Council – who want to reduce it to a 9-hole course and repurpose the other 9 holes into land for other recreational pursuits – and those who believe the best option is to leave Chamberlain Park as is. The Save Chamberlain Park campaign has the backing of New Zealand pro golfer Sir Bob Charles. “I wrote a letter in support of the course retaining its 18 holes,” he said.

“It would be a sad day if that does not happen.”

As it stands, Chamberlain Park is one of only two public golf courses in Auckland, the other being the Takapuna course on the North Shore. Established in 1936 as a Labour Government get-back-to-work initiative, Chamberlain Park's long-held reputation as a golf club for ordinary folk means it is regarded with much affection by many Auckland golfers, particularly those who wish to enjoy an occasional round without incurring costly membership fees. Casual golfers are always welcome at Chamberlain Park and there's a relaxed attitude to things such as tee times and dress code. While bookings are advised for groups, others are welcome to turn up and (within reason) tee off. The course is parkland, gently undulating fairways are lined with trees, and the greens are well maintained. It's an easy walking course although carts are available and can be booked at the pro shop. Although there is no driving range, a practice putting green is situated near the clubhouse.

As well as being near Auckland's CBD, Chamberlain

Park is also close to several other of the city's main attractions – the Auckland Zoo, Museum of Transport and Technology and Eden Park. Two other 18-hole golf courses, Akarana and Maungakiekie, are a 15- to 20-minute drive from the CBD. Green fees: $25-$30. 46A Linwood Avenue, Mt Albert. (09) 815 4999, chamberlainpark.co.nz
