The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Founders Heritage Park

-

It may be quaint and curious, but Founders Heritage Park is an easy place to keep children entertained. There is plenty to explore — from one of the early newspaper printers to trains, old fire trucks, dental surgeries and a large decommissioned commercial plane. All have been sourced and donated over the years, creating a living history for Nelsonians and tourists. A wander through its nooks and crannies is to time-travel back to the 1880s-1930s. Visitors will also find a café and restaurant as well as artisans in residence. Meet the park's various artists and try some of the freshly baked goods at the resident bakery or sip on a pint of Stoke beer. On the weekends, trains run from an old station down through the park and back. The facility also forms the backdrop to events such as March Fest, the Heritage Festival and the Nelson Arts Festival. 87 Atawhai Drive. (03) 548 2649, founderspark.co.nz
