Hygge at Clifton Bay

Most people settle on saying “that café in Clifton Bay” instead of trying to pronounce the name of this bustling eatery, named after the Danish word for cosiness. Hygge (pronounced hyoo guh), with its sunny outdoor seating, beach and Cape Kidnappers views and roaring fire in winter, does evoke a snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug feeling. Former kindergarten teacher Robyn Brannigan and her husband Kerry took over the business, formerly known as the Clifton Café, two years ago, giving it a facelift including an outdoor play area for kids. “I wanted something family-orientated, so mothers can have a nice coffee and not worry about their kids making too much noise.” The breakfast menu has all the classics, including eggs benedict, and the counters and cabinets are well-stocked with fresh pastries, muffins and scones. “To me, hygge is a feeling of contentment and sanctuary,” says Robyn. “In Denmark, it's about being warm and cosy, but if you translate that concept to the summertime in Hawke's Bay, it could be sitting in the shade by the sea with a glass of wine or ice cream.”
