The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Rush Munro’s ice creamery

-

When Rush Munro's opened a store in 1926, it was an instant sensation, selling all its confectionery in one day. When the Hawke's Bay earthquake flattened the shop in 1931, the store, which had then expanded into ice cream, was back up and running within 30 days, operating from a tent on Heretaunga Street. That location is still the home of the Rush Munro ice-cream gardens. The Currie family now runs the boutique ice creamery, the fifth family to be worthy of the term “super scoopers” and they continue to make recipes devised by founder Frederick Rush Munro. 704 Heretaunga Street West, St Leonards, Hastings.
