The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

A side trip to St Simon and St Jude Anglican Church, Rongotea

-

St Simon and St Jude Anglican Church is a delightful building admired for its exterior as well as the interior. Built in 1895 to a design by Frederick de Jersey Clere, the church bears the Gothic Revival style he used for the several other country buildings of its type. Note its steep pitched gables and a steeple, creating the “vertical emphasis” of this style of architecture, as well as its straight-point lancet windows. The interior is also beautiful, but the church isn't open often. Try Sunday and Tuesday mornings for a quiet peruse. 9-11 Ouse Street, Rongotea. 027 444
