The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Easy walks with kids Piriharakeke Walkway

-

This track is the perfect balance of exercise for the body and the mind. It winds along the Manawatū River Loop (a coil of land created by the pre-realignment of the river), past signs offering information about the area, including the flooding remediation work in 1948 that unintentionally reduced the river's flow and led to Foxton's port silting up. There's a short 1km loop track at the beginning, starting at the corner of Purcell and Harbour Streets, or keep going out through farmland, on stopbanks and over stiles to Trestle Bridge on SH1. Arrange a pick-up or walk back. It's 4km one way. Make sure to leave the farm gates as they were found.
