The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Kickstand

-

It may defy expectations to find a full-throttle motorcycle accessory shop in a small country town, but to owner Lyn Tollan, it makes total sense. “There are heaps of wicked rides around here — for example, over to Turakina Valley, or up around the back of Taihape. We used to ride through here all the time and stop, so I thought I'd move here and open a shop.” Kickstand was the result, and locals say it's not at all unusual to see a couple of dozen motorcycles parked outside Lyn's shop. She hasn't skimped on selection, filling it with everything from new helmets to high-end leathers, neckwarmers and hats (some knitted by the former embroidery designer herself), gloves, bags and ponchos. Of particular curiosity is the tiny vintage motorbike, made 50 years ago.

“It used to go, but the motor's shot now,” she says.
