Children’s Day fun at Founder’s park

-

Afree day celebrating children with lots of great activities is planned at Founder’s Heritage Park this Sunday.

The Family Fun Day is being run by organisations that work with young children, and has been funded by Pub Charities, Nelson City Council and Nelson Bays Primary Health.

It is the sixth Family Fun Day and last year’s attracted 3500 children.

The day is to celebrate Children’s Day, which is in March, but the celebrations have been shifted to June because of feedback from parents they would like an event in winter when there there are fewer free activities on.

The event’s theme is ‘‘Treasure our Children’’ so parents will be encouraged to show they are treasuring their children by bringing them along and participating in activities with them,’’ Nelson Tasman Kindergarten’s whanau facilitator Brenda Holdaway says.

Other activities planned include pony rides, bouncy castles, face painting and Flossie balloons.

The Founder’s train will be providing free rides on the hour every hour throughout the event.

Natureland Zoo will also be bringing a range of animals along for children to interact with.

The event has been organised by different groups including Nelson Tasman Kindergartens, Sport Tasman, PORSE, Tahuna Community Centre, Family Works, Barnardos KidStart, Community Oral Health Service Nelson, Stoke Toy Library and Parent’s Centre, Brenda says.

Organisations that work with children have been invited to provide an activity suitable for children. These activities will range from craft to painting to physical activities.

There is also a free return bus service from Richmond, leaving from Sundial Square to Founders and return, to help families join in the fun. The first bus leaves Richmond’s Sun Dial Square at 9.45am, with another leaving at 11am. This bus will stop at Main Rd Stoke (Stoke Primary School) and Hales Corner. A bus that leaves Sundial Square at 10.15am will stop at Nayland College and Muritai St (Tahunanui Kindergarten). For more information on the bus timetable see nelsontasman kindergartens.com or its facebook page.

A range of food stalls will be selling their wares and Founder’s Brewery Cafe will also be open.

Entertainers will perform from a special stage set.

The event will be on wet or fine.
