Aworld renowned expert on dyslexia and other learning difficulties will hold a free public lecture in Nelson.

Dr Gavin Reid is one of the keynote speakers at a conference in Nelson next weekend.

He is holding a public lecture before that conference, at Nelson College for Girls on Friday July 4 at 7pm.

Dr Reid will talk about dealing with dyslexia at home and in school.

His talk will provide strategies and ideas for dealing with dyslexia in the home and at school, as well as providing insights into dyslexia.

Dr Reid is an independent educational psychologist based in Britain who has written 27 books on dyslexia, literacy, learning styles and motivation. His works are used as core course texts in courses worldwide and some have been translated into Arabic, Polish, French, Italian and Greek.

Dyslexia is a a cognitive disorder related to reading and writing. It is characterised by people having difficulty with learning to read fluently and with accurate comprehension despite being of normal or above-average intelligence.

It includes difficulty in being able to distinguish the phonological sounds make up a language.

Dyslexia can make it difficult for a student to do well academically.

Nelson not-for-profit group Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) are excited they have been able to bring Dr Reid to Nelson. There are an estimated one or two students with dyslexia in each class-

that room. SLD’s coordinator Susie Cowper and educational assessor Gill Knight hope that as many people as possible will come to hear Dr Reid speak and they say the chance to hear such a respected expert speak in Nelson is amazing.

Dr Reid will be making presentations at the Learning Disabilities Association of New Zealand national conference and annual meeting on Saturday and Sunday.

The lecture is being sponsored by Big Save Furniture and by Celia Smith Accountancy Ltd.
