Free parking approved

-

Athree-month trial of free parking every day in Nelson’s central business district has begun, with the aim of encouraging shoppers to the city.

Nelson retailers and promotion group Uniquely Nelson went to a council meeting last week and in the public forum campaigned for free parking.

The council has long faced criticism over its parking strategy and enforcement, which has been fuelled by the ‘‘ unequal playing field’’ created by Richmond’s free parking.

Mayor Rachel Reese says the trial of free parking is about pro- viding a winter boost for the city centre.

‘‘This is one way we can respond to the needs of businesses in the CBD during the traditionally quieter winter months,’’ Reese said.

But the trial was just one piece of the puzzle, she said.

‘‘It’s now up to local people to support their local shops.’’

Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan said it was ‘‘fantastic’’ that the council had listened to retailers’ concerns.

Time limits remain on parking, and wardens will be out to enforce them.

The central area of Wakatu Square will remain as all-day paid parking, and the one-hour parking spaces around the edge of the square will be free.

The trial period runs until September 30.

Parking wardens will still check that drivers are sticking to time limits, and check for expired warrants and registrations.

But in some cases there may be a grace period and a reminder may be issued in the first instance rather than a fine.
