Pamper time will help women in need

- By CHELSEA ARMITAGE

Nelson women will be treated to manicures, makeovers and massages at the Women’s Pampering Day Out next week. The event, led by Sharyn Rouse of Destiny Church, has been in the planning stages for more than seven weeks and is raising funds for Nelson Women’s Refuge.

The charity is one close to Sharyn’s heart, having watched her sister go through the ordeal of escaping an abusive partner.

‘‘I’m very passionate about Women’s Refuge,’’ Sharyn said.

‘‘We love doing things for women. We want to treat the ladies in Nelson while also giving back to women in need.’’

The event coincides with Women’s Refuge fundraising month and will bring together local businesses selling their services for a donation to the charity.

The generous contributors have also donated gift baskets, books, massage vouchers, makeup and a mid-winter getaway in a local hotel to be given away every hour.

Organiser Sarah Daly said: ‘‘You can’t always get in there and help, but to be able to fundraise to help those who are; that is great.’’

There will be talks from health researcher Jason Shon Bennett, stylist Shannan Clarke and three local chefs presenting how to cook healthy meals on a budget.

There will be a special stall for teenagers, including their own makeup and hair stations.

Destiny Church has led many fundraising activities to help local people, including raising $18,000 to contribute to Cody Walsh’s life-changing operation in 2009.

Tickets are available from the church, Women’s Refuge and Equilibrium health for $8, or door sales will be available for $10. Women’s Pampering Day Out will be on Saturday July 19 at Destiny Church in Pascoe St, from 12pm to 5:30pm.
