Irish dancers set to mix it up

- SARA MEIJ

High jumps, tap dancing and dresses embellished with thousands of sequins - a performance by the Kildunne School of Irish Dance in Nelson is never dull.

The school is organising a fundraising show on December 18 at Stoke Memorial Hall to raise funds for dance school uniforms.

Kildunne School of Irish Dance Nelson co-owner and dance teacher Lianna Connor said the show consisted of a wide range of different dance styles.

‘‘We’re doing some salsa dancing with Irish dancing mixed into it.

‘‘We’re doing ballet versus Irish dancing, we’re going to do the Time Warp.’’

Connor said all the dances had been choreographed by herself or her students, apart from the traditional Ceilidh dances.

‘‘[The students are] doing really well, they pick everything up really quickly, they’re a great team to work with.’’

The school has 15 students, who will perform on Sunday.

The group has been practising since late October and are excited about showing off their skills.

Connor said there would also be a raffle with products donated by local companies such as Stoke New World, Nelson Fun Park, State Cinema, Yogi’s and Waimea Wines.

The Kildunne School of Irish Dance Nelson fundraising show is on December 18 from 6pm to 8pm at Stoke Memorial Hall.
