Kim schooled up on holistic health

- SARA MEIJ

Nelson woman Kim McCormack wants to raise awareness of the affect health and nutrition has on children’s ability to learn.

McCormack has been a primary teacher for the past 20 years and is combining her education experience and passion for health with the opening of a holistic health business in Nelson.

She said she had seen firsthand in the classroom how nutrition and overall wellness affects children’s focus and energy levels.

‘‘My philosophy is that kids can’t learn unless they’re happy or healthy.

‘‘When you’re a teacher you don’t have a massive amount of influence on most things, you can help them to be happy but their health kind of comes from the home.’’

She said that philosophy prompted her to start her own holistic health business.

McCormack said she wanted to educate and support families on their journey to good health.

She said she opened her business on Hardy St with a soft launch in December and launched officially this week.

McCormack said she had been working towards a career in holistic health for the past 12 years and had added ‘‘more strings to her bow’’ recently by completing qualifications such as a naturopath diploma.

McCormack’s ideas for the future include developing free seminars for parents to inform them about the benefits of a holistic approach to health as well as organising Healthy Hen nights, the healthier version of a hen’s do.

‘‘It’s my naturopath background really that gives me the chance to be able to offer these different things to different people.

‘‘It’s been a passion of mine for a long time, the natural health side of things, just being able to get out there and talk to people about it and inspire other people.’’
