School books place at champs

- CARLY GOOCH

Young book worms at the Kids Lit Quiz answered their way through hours of questions, vying for a spot at the national championships.

Nelson Intermediate hosted the Kids Lit Quiz on May 5 and came away champions of the day.

The team of four included Will Irvine, Tiaki Sharp, Tayte Hunwick and Malachi Stephenson who will be heading to the nationals at Wellington’s National Library of New Zealand on May 28.

Quizmaster Wayne Mills said the Nelson Intermediate team didn’t really have a coach. The kids looked after their own reading programme.

‘‘It was quite remarkable that they were actually able to do it by themselves.’’

The teams ranged in age from year six to year eight and answered questions from an array of books, Mills said.

‘‘This is the only thing in the world that says read everything, we will acknowledge all your reading from comics to the classics to Harry Potter.’’

The winning team won $500 to pay for their trip to Wellington and have the chance to head to Canada for the internationals if they can hold down first place among the 16 schools competing.

Waimea Intermediate came second and Upper Moutere School third.

New Zealand currently holds the world champions’ title thanks to Wellesley College in Lower Hutt.
